- The POPI Act is a comprehensive privacy law that is mandatory for all businesses within the private and public sector that process personal information in South Africa. The purpose of the POPIA is to safeguard people from harm by protecting their personal information and their privacy, which is a fundamental human right. Personal information is defined as information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person.The POPIA came into law 1 July 2020.
